In the remote corners of Ethiopia, where health facilities are scarce and conflict has displaced thousands, humedica’s Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams (MHNTs) are a lifeline. These dedicated teams travel across rugged terrain six days a week, reaching internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and vulnerable host communities with essential, life-saving healthcare.
Each MHNT is a fully equipped unit of health professionals, supported by logistics experts and community mobilizers, working tirelessly to ensure that even the most isolated households are not left behind.
Key Services Provided:
Medical Care
humedica’s MHNTs conduct over 550,000 consultations annually, treating a wide range of illnesses including malaria, pneumonia, anemia, and other preventable conditions that, without timely intervention, could become life-threatening.
Maternal & Child Health
Teams provide antenatal care, nutrition screening, and targeted maternal-child interventions to reduce maternal mortality and prevent malnutrition in children under the age of five.
Emergency Response
In areas affected by conflict or crisis, MHNTs deliver urgent primary healthcare, facilitate medical referrals, and respond quickly to disease outbreaks and emergencies.
Community Outreach
Health professionals go door-to-door offering home-based care, mental health and psychosocial support, hygiene education, and gender-based violence (GBV) support—often reaching those who cannot travel to health posts.
Impact & Achievements
- Increased Access:
- MHNTs bring healthcare directly to the doorstep of IDPs and conflict-affected families, breaking down barriers of geography and mobility.
- Stronger Health Systems:
- By rehabilitating health centers and building the skills of local professionals, MHNTs leave a sustainable impact long after immediate crises subside.
- Improved Health Outcomes:
- Through targeted interventions, humedica has improved recovery rates for children with malnutrition, provided safe delivery services for expectant mothers, and extended psychosocial and GBV support to those most in need.
Challenges on the Ground
- Drug & Supply Shortages:
- While MHNTs continue to deliver care, sustaining outreach and facility-based support depends heavily on a steady supply of medicines and materials.
- Security Concerns:
- Operating in conflict-prone regions means teams must constantly adapt and plan for safe and uninterrupted service delivery, even in unstable environments.
- Bridging the Gap in Access:
- In places where no other healthcare services exist, humedica’s Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams are the first—and often only—source of medical care. Their impact is not only measured in numbers, but in lives saved, mothers supported, and communities strengthened.
